How to Negotiate for a Free Cell Phone
New Customers
1. Browse the websites of all cellular-service providers in your region to check their plans and what phones they have available. Make a decision on which provider you would prefer to use. Deciding factors may be the monthly cost, monthly usage limits or available phones.
2. Look up phone specifications, and note the names of at least three phones you like the best. Write down their costs with a new contract. Do not include a phone on the list that is already available free of charge if you sign a new contract.
3. Call the service provider and ask for a free cell phone if you sign a lengthy contract, perhaps one of three years. They will probably offer you a phone from their pre-determined list of free phones. Ask for the most expensive phone on the list your made earlier. They will likely decline. Continue down the list while asking about the phones one by one. Insist in a nice tone with friendly manners that you would like to have one of those phones with your contract. If the person is not willing to give you any of those phones, ask her or him to let you talk to the supervisor or manager. If you still do not succeed, end the call and try again. With some persistence, you may be able to get the phone you like at no charge on an extended contract.
Existing Customers
4. Browse the website of your service provider and find the phone you would like to have for free. Note that you can't get a free phone until you have been with that provider for an extended period of time, which is generally at least one year.
5. Most service providers have a link on your billing page with the offers you have available in your account. Look up that section to see what you have available, and compare those offers with the phone you would like to have.
6. Call the service provider and let them know for how long you have been with them. Remind them you are a good customer that pays on time, and you would like to continue using their service for one or two more years if you could get that particular phone for free. Explain your existing phone is older and does not have the functionality you now require. With some insistence and persistence, you may be able to get a new phone with the existing contract, on in worst case, with a new contract. Remember that at any point during the call, you can ask the representative to let you speak with the supervisor or manager. They have more power to cut you a deal quickly.
