How to Get a Free Cell Phone If One Already Has a Plan
1. Get an upgrade. Although you are not a new customer, your cell phone provider might offer you free cell phones after you have been a customer for a certain amount of time--usually after the halfway point of your contract. If you have not reached your upgrade date, your provider might move you up if you order your new phone with a customer service representative.
2. Switch providers. If another provider offers a free phone you like, consider switching providers. Your new provider can also help you keep your present cell phone number for convenience. However, you will likely have to pay a termination fee with your old service provider.
3. Trade your phone. Sites such as Craigslist.org allow you to trade or sell your phone, so you can either get a new phone or use any sales proceeds to purchase a new phone. At Flipswap (see Resources), you can get your current phone appraised, and they will send you a check or gift certificate that you can put toward a new phone.
How to Send a Free Text Message to a Phone Online Read Response
1. Open your Web browser and visit the Google Voice setup website, listed in the Resources section.
2. Enter your zip code and select 'Search' to pull up a list of available Google Voice numbers. Select the number you want.
3. Select a four-digit PIN and enter it into the appropriate box. Enter it again to confirm it, and check the box next to the licensing agreement. Click 'Continue.'
4. Enter your cell phone number as the forwarding number. Google Voice will then give you a two-digit confirmation number, and will then immediately call your cell phone. Answer the call and enter in the confirmation number when prompted. Click 'Finish' on your computer screen to complete setup.
5. Click 'Text' on your Google Voice website. It is in the upper left corner. Enter the phone number of the recipient and the body of the message. Click 'Send.' When the recipient responds, the message will pop up under your sent message.
How to Block SMS Messages
1. Log into your cell phone account online and look for 'Messaging Preferences' or a similar option. Some providers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, Alltel, Verizon and Sprint, now allow you to adjust your settings to block certain contacts. You may have to pay an additional monthly fee and register for this service. You'll probably have a limit for the number of contacts you can add to this list.
2. Save the phone number to your contact list. You can name it 'Blocked.' Then edit the contact and scroll to 'Messages' or 'Text' options. Change the volume to 'silent' and turn any LED light and vibration settings off. This will allow you stop being notified when you get a message from this person.
3. Call your cell phone provider and ask the representative to block certain phone numbers from texting you. Some providers will gladly accommodate this request because they do not want you to remove text messaging completely because of annoyances from one person.
4. Report all cell phone spammers to your cell phone company. Take note of the phone number that sent a text to you and the product being sold so you can make a complete report. This may not be an instant fix, but over time, the spam may stop because of your complaint. Ask the provider to credit your account for any unwanted spam messages.
