How to Check for an Available Toll
1. Visit the website of a phone company like the one provided in the Resources section for AT&T. The tool available at this site allows you to look up the availability of specific toll-free telephone numbers.
2. Determine which first three digits you would like to be associated with your toll-free number. The most common number is 800, however, you may also search for 888, 877, 866 or all of them. Click on the drop-down menu to select the toll-free area code for your search and scroll to the number you would like to check. If you want to check all the toll-free area codes, choose '8**'.
3. Decide whether you would like your toll-free telephone number to spell a word that would be easy for your callers to remember. If you own a bookstore, for example, you may wish to search the availability of numbers with the last four digits spelling 'BOOK.' To do this, type in 'BOOK' into the last spot of the search form on the phone company search tool.
4. Type '***' in the second form blank of the toll-free search form to indicate you don't care what numbers are listed there. (Using an asterisk in any position of the form indicates any digit is acceptable.) If you have specific digits or letters you would like to search for the second form blank, enter those there too. For example, you might enter 'BUY' into the second form blank for your bookstore to check the availability of the phone number 'BUY-BOOK.'
5. Click 'Check Availability' on the toll-free telephone number search tool to search for available numbers that meet your search choice. Review the results. You may then click to order a selected phone number or revise your search and try again.

How to Make a Phone Call From a Computer to a Cell Phone
1. Load your VoIP software. Currently, the most popular option is Skype, which is a standalone desktop application that supports instant messaging, voice and video messaging and phone calls. Upon loading Skype, you will be prompted to create a user account and add prepaid funds to make phone calls.
2. Plug the headset into the computer. Headsets typically come with either a USB plug or two 1/8 inch plugs: one for the headphones and one for the microphone. If the headset has a USB plug, plug it into an available USB port on the computer and wait a few moments for the operating system to recognize it. If the headset has two 1/8 inch plugs, insert the plug with a headphone icon into the headphone jack of the sound card and the plug with the microphone icon into the microphone jack. If you are running an old operating system, you may need to access its audio properties to manually route the audio through the headset.
3. Make a test call to ensure that the headset is working properly. In Skype, a test call can be made by double clicking 'Skype Test Call' in the contact list. You should hear a voice that prompts you to speak a test message into the microphone and when you do, your message will be played back to you. If you do not hear the voice or your message is not played back to you, access the audio settings by clicking on the 'Tools' menu and then on 'Options'. There will a tab labeled 'Audio Settings' that enables you to test and troubleshoot the audio.
4. Make a call to a cell phone by clicking on 'Call phones', entering the phone number, and clicking 'Call'. During the call, the Skype window will display the balance of your funds so that you can monitor how much the call is costing. When you have completed the call, simply click on 'End Call'.
How to Ping a Cell Phone
1. Find out the phone number or serial number of the phone you want to ping.
2. Gain permission to access information from a cell phone company concerning the cell phone you want to locate. Have the person who is the account holder for the phone call their cell phone company and verify that it is okay for you to access account information including pinging information.
3. Call the cell phone provider of the phone you are trying to ping. Tell them the account you wish to access and give them the information they request, such as an address, in order to verify that you are allowed to access this information. Once cleared, the provider will be able to tell you the last tower the cell phone signalled from. This will help you narrow down the phone owner's current location.
