How to get a free phone in Florida for the hearing impaired

1. If you live in Florida and have trouble hearing on the telephone you may qualify for this free service.
2. Here in FL we have the Florida Telecommunications Relay, Inc. Known as FTRI. This is a statewide nonprofit organization that provides special phones for:
Deaf
Hard of Hearing
Deaf/Blind
Speech impaired
Anyone experiencing frustration using the telephone, FTRI may be able to help.
3. Floridians who are eligible:
- Age 3 or Older
- Permanent Florida Resident
- Certified as hard of hearing, deaf, deaf/blind or speech impaired. This program loans out telephone equipment for as long as it is needed. FTRI helps people communicate.
4. Who Pays?
The Florida legislature passed the Telecommunications Access System Act (TASA) in 1991 to make basic telecommunications accessible and affordable for the Hard of Hearing, Deaf, Speech Impaired and Deaf/Blind persons. In response to TASA, the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) directed local exchange telephone companies to form a non profit corporation to fulfill the TASA requirements. FTRI was founded to loan specialized telephone equipment and ring signaling devices to qualified residents of Florida as long as they need it, at no charge.
5. There are a few conditions for those receiving the equipment which will be explained before the delivery of the equipment. These items cannot be sold, given away or loaned to anyone else.
The item must be returned to FTRI if it's no longer needed or if the person moves outside of the state of Florida.
6.
For those living outside of FL, I suggest doing a google search in your state to see if there is a Telecommunications Relay service available.

How to Get Sprint to Let You Upgrade Early

1. Determine how much time is left on your contract. Log on at mysprint.com under 'my account.' Sprint will typically allow early upgrades if the account is eligible in one to three months. Any longer may take some heavy negotiating and patience.
2. Check if the account is in good standing. Sprint requires that all accounts be in good standing before an upgrade -- early or otherwise. There should be no past due balances or late payments. Sprint is more apt to help customers that pay their bill in full and on time each cycle.
3. Visit your local Sprint store. Locations can be found at sprint.findlocation.com. Another option is to call Sprint at 1-800-SPRINT-1.
4. Explain the situation. Let the representative know if you haven't had any recent upgrades or have an older model phone. Sprint tends to offer early upgrades to customers who only upgrade when their phone is getting older and on the verge of dying.
5. Check for a Premier Status. Sprint offers a loyalty program to customers who have been with the company for 10 or more years. However, those who have been with Sprint for at least three months and have data plans of $69.99 on a single line or $99.99 on a shared line have the possibility of becoming a Premier Customer. The perk of this status is the eligibility of upgrading 10 months sooner.
6. Consider an upgrade discount. Accounts that have been opened for at least one year are eligible for an upgrade discount. This is slightly different because you can save $150 on a regularly-priced phone with a two-year contract. A one-year contract can save $75 off of a regularly-priced phone. This program is only available to those purchasing a data plan priced $39.99 or higher.
