How to Send Free Text Messages Abroad
1. Check your contact's mobile phone carrier for free text messaging online. Find out what carrier your friends and family abroad use. Search those carriers' websites for free SMS services. Typically, you can use an online form to type a message and send it to any subscriber number for that carrier. Enter the contact's phone number, including area code, and your message. Keep your messages short as there is a character limit.
2. Use Yahoo! Messenger (messenger.yahoo.com) or another instant-messaging program with free SMS service. In Yahoo! Messenger, sign into your account. Right-click one of your contacts and select 'Contact Details.' Enter your recipient's mobile phone number with country and area code plus the number. Save the changes. Right-click again and select 'Send SMS Message.' You can now type in your message and send it off just like an instant message when chatting. The procedure is similar for other software with SMS support.
3. Use an online service, such as Chikka (chikka.com), that lets you send free SMS text messages to your contact's country. Follow the prompts for registration and software download (if you want it). You may be asked to give your eail address instead of your mobile phone number, depending on your location. Once registered, you can sign into the Chikka website and send and receive texts. If you are offline, your messages will be delivered either to your phone or inbox.

Options for Calling to From Mexico
Types
You can call a landline number in Mexico, which costs less than calling a mobile phone. Calling landlines in Mexico usually costs 4 cents per minute, while calling mobiles costs 20 cents per minute. Cell phone carriers also offer international calling plans, like AT&T's Viva Mexico, which charges $55 a month, and Verizon's Mexico-Friendly calling plan, where callers can opt to extend their nationwide coverage to Mexico for $50-$60 a month.
Effects
Calling from Mexico will help people keep in touch with their family members in the U.S. However, it is expensive to call from Mexico to the U.S.; that's why most of the time, it's those in the U.S. who call their friends and family in Mexico. Calls originating from the U.S. are not without a price though, and although it is cheaper to call Mexico from the U.S., having relatives from Mexico call the U.S. will help split costs.
Cheaper techniques
There are a number of options available for those who want to call Mexico from the United States. Prepaid cards are popular, and you can buy cards with denominations that range from $5 to $20. There may also be cheaper options online, such as using Skype, where you call directly from your computer to phones in Mexico. Skype has international rates for calls originating from a computer to a landline or mobilephone, but you and the recipient can make free calls if you are both online.
Calling From Mexico
One of the popular ways to call from Mexico is through payphone cards, which are also known as 'tarjeta lada.' Since calling from Mexico to the U.S. is expensive, Mexicans find it cheaper to limit their calls to the specified minutes on a card instead of calling direct. Another popular way of calling from Mexico aside from phone cards is through call back services, which charge your credit card directly. Call back services allow you to dial a number, hang up after a ring, then have an operator call you back to connect you to your call recipient.
Potential
With the onset of online telecommunications services, people may be able to call Mexico for free. Rebtel.com, a mobile VoIP provider, has a service called 'Smart Call,' where a person in the U.S. can talk to a person in Mexico for free on their mobile phones. Talkster.com also offers a similar service, where people can make international calls for free by listening to ads.
