How do I Send an Unknown Text Message?
1. TxtEmNow.com is a free SMS service that allows you to send unknown text messages to whoever you like. You can send messages to recipients inside or outside the United States. Optionally, if you choose, you can identify yourself by name. Leaving the contact name field blank sends a text message as anonymous.
2. TextForFree.net gives you a free option, where anonymous text messaging is possible. This services is heavily supported by advertisements, however, sending a text message takes five easy steps. This site requires you to known the recipient's mobile carrier. If you do not know the carrier, they provide you with a free mobile provider look-up tool. Additionally, they have a sister website for United Kingdom users.
3. FakeMyText advertises and prides itself on being an anonymous mobile text messaging service. When visiting the website, you have the choice to register/login to a free account or send a text message without registration. Sending an anonymous SMS on this service takes three quick steps and you do not need to know the recipient's mobile carrier. All that is required is the cell phone number you are sending to.
How to Locate an SMS Sender
1. Visit the site Trace Text. Enter the number you got the text from in the main textbox on the site. Click 'Search Now!' This will give you the number's general location. You'll have to purchase a subscription to trace it back to the exact address.
2. Download and install the app ReverseLookup for your Android phone. This application lets you look up a phone number that has tested you directly from your android phone and trace where it came from. This version of the app is free to use.
3. Visit the website Ugux. This site is completely free to use, and allows you enter the number that texted you, area code first, into the three boxes on the site in order to search the online public directory for a trace on the number.
How to Test Your SMS
1. Use a free online text message site such as SMSEverywhere, Mobile-Sender or SendSNSNow (see Resources). Use one of these sites to send a text message to your phone by typing in your cellphone number (check its directions for how to format it), selecting your carrier, then typing in your message. The text message should not take too long to arrive to your phone, and your phone should notify you when it is received.
2. Send a text message to an email address. Start to send a new text message, but instead of typing in a number or selecting one of your contacts, use your keypad to type in an email address. (As this is for testing purposes, select one of your own.) Type in your message, then send it. Access your email to see if it worked. It may take a few minutes for the message to arrive.
3. Ask a friend to use their phone or to send you a text message. It generally does not matter what carrier either of you are using, nor what texting plan you have (unless one of you has run out of text messages). If and when you receive their message, send a reply text to make sure that sending works as well.
