One type of modem.
Verify that you have a high-speed Internet connection. This will be either via cable, digital subscriber line, or satellite. You can't convert your PC to wireless technology if you have dial-up. For any of the high-speed services you will have a modem which is connected by cables to both your incoming signal from your Internet service provider and your computer.

A PCI card ready to install.
Decide whether you will install a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) card or a USB adapter in your PC. The USB adapter installs quickly and easily, taking only a few seconds to connect. The PCI card requires more effort but has a stronger signal than the USB adapter. If you have chosen to install the PCI card, proceed to step 3. If you have decided to go with the USB adapter, skip step 3 and proceed to step 4 of these instructions.

PCI connectors on the motherboard.
Install the PCI card using these steps. Unplug the PC. Disconnect it from the communications cable. Remove screws holding the computer's side in place. On the motherboard, locate a white plastic slot whose size matches your PCI card. Remove the corresponding cover plate from the opening on the back of the PC. Slide your card into the connector. Match the PCI edge connector with the open slot on the motherboard. The card should snap into place with a slight push; don't force it. The wide end of the PCI board will fill the spot where you removed the cover plate. Secure with the screw removed earlier. Plug in the computer and turn it on.

Your PC is ready to work in wireless mode.
Install the router software on your PC. Then install the PCI drivers on the PC. The USB adapter should not require any software installation, but you may need to physically connect the PC and the router the first time the router is used. If the PC is not close to the laptop you can use a laptop computer to initialize the router for its first use. Once your router is activated you can disconnect the communications cable. The PC will now connect to the Internet without any communications cables.
