How to Send a Free Text Message on Cingular Wireless
1. Log into your email account and open a new window to compose a new message.
2. Type the phone number of the person you wish to send the message to in the recipient box, which is usually proceeded with the word 'To.' Include the area code along with the number and make sure that the number does not have any dashes or spaces.
3. Complete the email address by adding '@txt.att.net' after the phone number. For example, if you want to send a text message to the number 555-555-0199, you will use 5555550199@txt.att.net. The address to send the text message will be: yournumber@txt.att.net.
4. Type your message into the message box window. AT&T currently limits each text message to 160 characters. According to the AT&T website, 'Each message longer than 160 characters will be broken up into multiple segments and delivered separately. Messages longer than 160 characters are billed as multiple messages.'
5. Click 'Send' to send the message. The message will be sent as a text message and the receiver will see the message as a text message on his or her cell phone.
