How to Dial a US Number From a Payphone at a US Airport
1. Obtain nickels, dimes or quarters if you plan on making the phone call using coins. Pennies are not accepted by payphones. If you prefer using a prepaid phone card, you can purchase one at a convenience store in your vicinity. Prepaid phone cards come loaded with minutes that you can use at any payphone. You must purchase calling cards from your phone company; calls placed using calling cards are charged to your home phone bill.
2. Place a local phone call using coins. Pick up the receiver of the payphone and listen for the dial tone. Insert the coins into the payphone and dial the desired seven-digit phone number.
3. Place a local toll call using coins. Input the cash change into the payphone after listening for the dial tone and dial '1' followed by the seven-digit phone number to which you want to connect.
4. Place a long-distance (nationwide) phone call using the payphone. After inputting the change into the payphone, dial '1,' followed by the area code and the seven-digit phone number of the person you want to reach.
5. Place a nationwide phone call using a prepaid phone card or calling card. Listen for the dial tone. Dial '0' followed by the area code and the seven-digit phone number of the person you want to call. The operator will require you to enter the 10-digit calling card number. Your call will then be connected.
