How to Get My Traffic Alerts
1. Use the Global Alerts Network mobile alerts service (see Resources). This service is free, but as of March 2011 it only works on BlackBerry and Android devices. Download the application and follow the normal procedure for installing new programs on your mobile device. Afterward, create an online account via your home computer and enter the login details on the mobile application. You can then program special alerts on the website. These include traffic and weather conditions for the areas you plan to drive. The mobile application keeps track of your device via GPS and sends pertinent alerts based on your position and driving route.
2. Sign up for mobile or computer alerts with Beat the Traffic (see Resources). This subscription-based service costs $19.95 per month as of March 2011. You can program specific driving routes or areas of interest and set alerts to be sent to your computer or mobile device. The service also features an iPad or iPhone app that lets you interface quickly with your account settings while on the move. Beat the Traffic also offers a free two-week trial for email or text message alerts so you can evaluate the service.
3. Use Navteq's integrated traffic alerts system, which is free as of March 2011. You have the option to design custom alerts based on particular driving routes. These alerts can be configured for specific days and times, depending on your commuting or traveling needs. Navteq lets you send the alerts via email or text message, and even offers the option to receive a voice call that alerts you to changing traffic conditions along your route.
