How to Get Gmail Alerts on a Mobile
1. Determine your carrier's email extension. See Resources for a link to a full list. You can also use this to send an email as a text message to anyone with cell phone text messaging enabled.
2. Access your Gmail settings. Sign into Gmail and click the 'Settings' tab located at the top right-hand corner of the screen. This will bring up all settings for your email account.
3. Set up forwarding to your mobile. Select the 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP' tab at the top of the settings page. Click the 'Add a Forwarding Address' button, then type in the mobile number with the extension--for example, 5129991212@txt.att.net.
4. Confirm the mobile number. A text message will arrive within a few seconds with a confirmation number. Enter this confirmation in the corresponding box below the 'Add a Forwarding Address' button. Double-check the confirmation number is correct, then press 'Enter.'
5. Add a filter. If you only want email from specific people, such as a boss or close friends, you can add filters that send only the emails you want to receive to your mobile. Click 'Add a filter' and enter your desired parameters.
