Will Gmail Send SMS and Pictures?
Enabling SMS Messaging
The SMS messaging feature in Gmail must be enabled for it to work. To enable SMS, click the gear icon in the upper right corner of the Gmail interface. Select “Labs” from the menu. Browse the Labs tab for the “SMS in Chat” entry. Select “Enable,” and then scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Save Changes” button. Gmail will return you to your inbox. The “Send SMS” box will now appear above your Chat box.
Sending SMS Messages
Enter the phone number of the person you want to message into the Send SMS box and press Enter. Enter a name to associate with the phone number and confirm you have entered the number correctly, and then click “Save.” A chat window will pop up with the contact’s name and telephone number. Enter a message as you would in any other Gmail chat session and press Enter to send. The message you entered will be delivered to the phone number as an SMS message. Like Chat history, SMS message history will be saved by default. It costs nothing to send an SMS through Gmail, though there may be a cost to the recipient depending on his service.
Sending Pictures
Gmail is capable of sending images via email. Most common image formats, including JPEG, PNG and GIF, are able to be transmitted. The first way to send a picture in Gmail is to use the “Attach a file” link. Open a new or existing email and click “Attach a file” below the Subject line. In the window that pops up, find the image you want to send, select it and click “OK.” The image will attach to the email and will transmit when you click “Send.” You can also click the “Insert Image” button on the toolbar below the subject line. Files selected using the Insert Image button will be imported directly into the body of the message rather than as separate attachments. Both methods allow you to send a picture or multiple pictures, and both methods can be used at the same time if you want.
Assigning a Personal Picture
Another way of sending a picture is to select a personal Gmail picture that will display when you are chatting with or emailing someone. To assign yourself a picture, click the gear icon representing Options in the upper right corner of the Gmail interface. Click “Mail Settings,” and then find the “My picture” entry under the “General” tab. Click “Select a picture” to assign a personal picture for all of your Gmail communications.
