How to Get Free Cell Phone Usage

1. Find out if you qualify. To participate in the SafeLink cellular service program, you must be enrolled in one of several government or state assistance programs. If you are receiving government assistance benefits, such as food stamps, government heating assistance or even Medicaid, you automatically qualify. Other programs on the qualification list include Federal Pubic Housing Assistance, Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Crisis Intervention and the Work First program.

The application process is simple and easy.
Apply for the service. The easiest way to enroll for free cell phone usage from SafeLink is to apply for the program directly on its website (see References). You can do this from any location where you have access to an Internet connection. At the website, click on the 'Enroll' tab at the top of the page. This brings you to a short form that you must fill out that asks you to provide your name, address, contact information and Social Security number. You can choose from three plans that range from 68 to 250 free minutes per month. Choose the number of minutes that is best suited for your needs. Please note that these phones also have text capabilities and are charged at a rate of one minute per text. After you finish the application, follow the on-screen instructions to submit. You are given an enrollment ID number; write it down because you will need it to check the status of your application.

Check your status after you apply to see if your application was approved.
Check your status. Wait a few hours and then return to the site to see if your application was approved. When you go back to the site, click on the 'Check Status' button on the top of the screen near the site's search bar. Click the 'Check Enrollment' option and follow the link to where it prompts you to enter your enrollment ID number. After you type in the number, the site takes you to a page that tells you if you qualified. If you are eligible, you see a 'Congratulations' message that tells you your phone will be delivered in five to 10 business days.
4. Make the most of your service. One of the great benefits to this program is that it is entirely free. SafeLink does not charge for its phones, monthly service minutes or shipping and there are no annual contracts or bills. You also benefit from the ability to purchase extra minutes if you run out of free minutes. You can purchase additional minutes wherever TracFone air time cards are sold. Adding additional minutes to your phone does not affect your free monthly minutes. As an extra benefit, purchasing a 60-minute card gets you 100 minutes on your SafeLink phone.

Don't forget to cancel your service when you no longer need it.
Know how to cancel your service. The SafeLink program provides free cell phones and air time minutes for families and individuals in need. No limit is put on how long you can use this service. It is only asked that when you are no longer participating in government assistance programs and no longer need the service that you cancel it. If you feel that you can now afford cell service on your own, you can cancel your SafeLink service by visiting its site, clicking on the 'Service and Support' bar and choosing the 'Service Cancellation' option. It is also required that after a year you reverify your need by filling out a short form (similar to your original application) to continue your service. The company emails you a friendly reminder when it comes time to do this.
