How to Get Free Cell Service

1. Familiarize yourself with participating states. As of 2010, SafeLink offers service in Ala, Ark, Conn, D.C, Del, Fla, Ga, Ill, La, Mass, Md, Ma, Mich, Miss, Mo, Nev, N.H, N.J, N.Y, N.C, Oh, Pa, R.I, S.C, Tenn, TX, VA, Wash, W.Va, Wis and Puerto Rico. Eligibility is determined by the state in which you reside, but generally, if you are currently receiving public assistance such as Food Stamps, Medicaid or Tempary Assistance Needy Families, you may qualify for the service. Contact SafeLink (WWW.SAFELINKWIRELESS.COM) to verify your eligibility.
2. Find a copy of your last tax return; SafeLink will require you to provide proof of your household income. If you don't have you last tax return you may also use last three pay check stubs.
3. Choose your calling plan. SafeLink offers three calling plans, but depending on your income, you may be limited in what plans to you may choose from. SafeLink uses that discount that the FCC used to give on a land line service to purchase minutes for your wireless service. For example; if you have an income of $1,000 per month, the FCC may have given you a $30.00 per month discount on your land line service. SafeLink will take that $30.00 and purchase minutes for your wireless phone instead. Your neighbor may have an income on $800 per month. The FCC might give him a bigger discount, maybe $70.00 per month; therefor your neighbor would be eligible for a larger wireless plan that you.
