How to Send Free SMS Text Messages to a Cell Phone

1. Sign up for a free email service if you don't already have one. Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are three major free email providers.
2. Select the option to compose a new email message from your email service. Click on 'Compose Mail' for Google Gmail users, 'New' at the top of the menu bar for MSN Hotmail users and click on the 'New' menu and select 'Email Message' for Yahoo users.
3. Search for the recipients' texting addresses according to their cellphone service provider. Typically, the address begins with a recipient's 10-digit phone number followed by their service provider's unique address. For example, for AT&T, you would address the email '##########@txt.att.net' with the person's 10-digit phone number in place of the pound signs. A list containing common service provider's texting addresses has been provided in the Resources section.
4. Compose your email and send the message by clicking on 'Send' or 'Send Message' depending on your provider. Your email will be sent as a text message to the recipient's phone.
