How Does Text Messaging Work?

Introduction
Texting on cell phones has become the preferred way of communication amongst the younger generation. Now with more sophisticated phones and smart devices, texting has spilled over into the business world and become a hit with adults. As new cell phones come out, networks are offering better solutions and packages for this new technical obsession.
Some may wonder what the technology behind text messaging is or how it is possible. How does text travel over the airwaves and reach its desired destination intact? The technology behind text messaging is SMS (short message service). SMS is used to send and receive messages to and from cellular phones. SMS has its limitations since it only allows for up to 160 characters in the messages. The 160-character limit is only for Latin letters, numbers and symbols. Other languages have a 70-character limit.
How it Works
Cell phones are always sending and receiving information through signals even when the phone isn't in use. The signals are sent and received from a cell phone tower or control channel. In order for the phone calls and messages to come through, the control channel needs to know which phone belongs to which phone number. Depending on the location of the cell phone, it will communicate with different towers as the user moves around the city, state, country and even the world. If the phone is unable to communicate with a tower, then it will not receive a signal and can't be used.
The control channel maps the path for SMS, or text messages. When a message is sent, it first must go through the nearby tower and then the SMS center. The SMSC receives the message and sends it to the appropriate tower closest to the location of the cell phone and then to the destination. So what is the SMS job in the entire process? SMS formats the message in a way that it is able to travel to and from the town, and still be received by the cell phone. SMS also sends data associated with the message, such as the length of the message, destination, format and time stamp.
Pros
There are reasons why users prefer text messaging over other forms of communications. For one, they are more discreet than a phone call because the threat of being overheard is removed. Sending a text message is also quicker than placing a telephone call. SMS provides portability that email and instant messaging over a computer does not (although new Smart phones are on the market that handle these tasks). SMS messages can also be delivered even if the phone is turned off or out of range. Once regular service is once again supplied to the phone, any waiting messages will come through.
Cons
There are certain disadvantages to using text messaging. The SMS technology can easily be attacked. An overwhelming number of text messages sent at once can overpower the control channels and hinder people from receiving their phone calls. Critics have also criticized the cost of text messaging and the sometimes long hold time involved in receiving messages.

Tricks With SMS

Update Status on Multiple Social Networks
Use the services provided by Posterous, Ping and Hellotxt to update your social network status by text. To update plain text without other media, text 'Post + your message' to Posterous at 41411. For media-based updates, send a media message (MMS) with your photos, videos and other media to post@posterous.com, which will update all your default networks. You can send an email by SMS by adding @ in the 'To:' textbox. With Ping.fm, post directly to a single network by using a message prefix as a trigger. For example, @fl accesses Flickr and @ma lets you update Mashable. Hellotxt is similar to Ping except that it uses hashcodes for service-specific posts.
Get Updates from Networks
Take advantage of Twitter to keep up with updates via SMS. Twitter gives you the option to follow updates by SMS, in addition to selecting which updates you will receive by text. You can choose which of the people you follow to receive updates from. If you only want to receive news updates on your phone from your preferred news sources on Twitter, choose to have their updates sent as texts. Another money-saving trick is to direct message friends from other countries through Twitter, which will save you long-distance SMS charges. In the case of Facebook, getting status updates from friends by SMS involves a one-click 'Subscribe via SMS' function.
Add Appointments to Google Calendar
Register your cell phone with Google Calendar to check your schedule by SMS. Go to the Settings page and Mobile Setup tab to link the calendar to your phone. Once you have set up the phone you can receive notifications of your calendar information by texting GVENT one of the following words: 'next,' for the next event, 'day,' for all events planned for the present day, 'nday' for events scheduled for the following day. To add events, text a message to GVENT with the details of the event you'd like to schedule. Google Calendar will decipher what you are talking about and update your calendar.
Track Expenses
Manage expenses through SMS with Buxter, where you can send short text messages to report transactions and check balances. Your command might read: 'Bill payment 812.14 acct:boa, amex', which might get the response: 'Transfer: You transferred $812.14 to pay your credit card bill.' You can send multiple reports and transactions by separating them by a semicolon or pressing 'Enter.'

How to Tap a Cellphone

1. If the cellphone you're tapping is a Symbian, Windows mobile, Blackberry or iPhone model, download and install FlexiSPY. The type of phone you have determines the FlexiSPY software you'll need and the features you'll be able to use. Depending on the FlexiSPY version, you'll be able to see emails sent from the phone, view the call history or listen to conversations already in progress. You can use it to do more than just tap a cellphone. If the phone has a GPS feature, FlexiSPY allows you to see the person's exact location on your computer. You can also remotely activate a microphone on the cellphone and hear what's going on in the room. And all of this is totally invisible to the cellphone user.
2. Use RecordiaPro when you cannot listen to a conversation in real time. While FlexiSPY is good for listening to conversations as they're going on, it's not so helpful if you're at work or busy doing something else. Use RecordiaPro to tap a cellphone while you're away. This remote service automatically records all incoming calls. Once a call is complete, you'll be able to log in in the RecordiaPro system at any time and listen to the conversation online.
3. Download all SMS messages with the Cell Phone Spy Data Extractor. This device looks like a USB drive, but it's really a SIM card reader. You remove the SIM card from the cellphone, insert it into the Cell Phone Spy Data Extractor and connect the extractor to your computer's USB port. While you won't be able to listen to conversations, you will be able to see all deleted text messages, contacts and telephone numbers from the cellphone.

Tips to Get Free Minutes on Boost i450

Promotional Deals
The Boost Mobile company regularly releases promotional deals for its customers. For example, one deal that went on for a few years allowed existing customers to get 10 percent back on all the calls they made with their Boost Mobile phone, as long as they spent at least $10 per month and did so for three consecutive months. So, if customers' cell-phone bills totaled $100 after the three months, then they would receive $10 back, making those minutes, which amounted to 10 minutes, free. Different promotional deals similar to this are announced through Boost Mobile from time to time, but, often, you have to be a Boost Mobile customer to hear about them.
Unlimited Plan
For $50 a month, Boost Mobile users can talk, text, browse the web and do anything else for an unlimited amount of time on their Boost phones. This is an excellent option for people who talk or text daily; this option gives users many extra minutes, for which they would otherwise pay on a day-to-day or call-to-call mobile-phone plan, for free. As well, these Boost i450 users don't have to keep track of their talk time or amount of texts.
Reboosting Savings
Reboosting is a term used for Boost Mobile phones, which allows people to add more money to their phone's account so they can continue to talk and use their account still without signing any type of contract. Many times this is done through purchasing a promotional card with a preset amount of minutes, costing you a few extra dollars. For example, if you spend $50 on a Boost Mobile card, you'll ultimately pay $53 to $55 with tax. However, if you buy the card on eBay, you can save the tax you would have to pay and sometimes even get a discount on the card. There are also companies that sell universal mobile-phone cards that allow you to add minutes to your Boost i450 phone for even cheaper rates.

How to Upgrade Your Cell Phone Before Your Contract Is Up

1. Review your mobile carrier's upgrade policy. Some providers offer an early upgrade program that allows you to upgrade a few months before your contract expires. Find the details on the company website, in your contract or by calling customer service.
2. Negotiate with customer service. There are exceptions to every rule, and in some cases, a representative will make one for you. If your old cellphone has been lost, stolen or is broken, offer to sign a new contract early for a discount on a new phone. You will probably have more luck with this approach by calling your provider's toll-free hotline than going in to a store. It helps if your account is in good standing and with no past due balances.
3. Call your service provider's customer service hotline and ask to speak to a representative in cancellations or the customer retention department. This is a last resort, to be used if you were unsuccessful when speaking to customer care. Explain your situation and mention that you are dissatisfied with the response you received from other representatives. Explain that you are considering canceling. You may be offered a discount on a device or an early upgrade as an incentive to remain a customer.
4. Consider using auction sites or buying a used device from a friend. This is one way around negotiating with your mobile carrier and you may be able to get a phone at a much lower cost than full retail. Once you have your phone, simply move your SIM card over from the old phone or call your provider to have the phone added to your account. You won't need to sign a new contract to activate the new device.

Free Cell Phones and Cheap Plans

Free Cell Phones?
Cellular service providers entice people into contracts by offering free cell phones. Generally, there is an additional charge to get the really fancy phones with all the latest features. Some companies not only won't charge you for the cell phone, they'll also send you money. In 2009, letstalk.com offered several free cell phones that after rebates and discounts, would net you $25. They include Samsung's Eternity, Impression and Solstice; Sony's Ericsson W518A and W760A and several others. But to get any of these phones and the money back, you must sign a contract for service with AT&T.If you opt for signing up for a plan for the sole purpose of getting the phone, there could be some pretty costly consequences. Cellular companies have caught on to this trick and will not hesitate to put a mark on your credit and many times will go to the trouble of obtaining a judgment to recover not only the retail cost of the phone along but also the balance due on the contract; so that phone you got for free could cost thousands if you're sued. As of 2009, free cell phones always required a new contract or an extension of an existing contract.
Disposable Cell Phones
A 2008 article in the New York Daily News discusses what is probably the most inexpensive, no-frills, cell phone on the market called the Hop-On. For only $10, the phone claims compatibility with more than 40 U.S. service providers. This disposable phone offers four hours of talk time and 150 hours of standby time. It has a built-in flashlight and voice mail. There is a $5 rebate for recycling the phone rather than throwing it away. So if you recycle the phone, it only costs $5.
Prepaid Cell Phones
Prepaid cell phones are available in places like Walmart, Kmart; Walgreens, Target and even some grocery stores. Prepaid phones are a bargain since the cost of the phone is relatively low and you pay for a specific number of minutes. They are convenient for the person who only wants a cell phone for emergency use or for the person who makes very few calls. Most companies that provide cellular service have prepaid cell phones available and additional minutes can be purchased from their stores.
Used Cell Phones
Used cell phones are phones that have been rebuilt or refurbished, and the styles can be somewhat outdated. Some places offer newer models, but these phones are not always the most cost-effective. In some cases it would be better to purchase a new phone. Guarantees are not long-lasting, either, since some of them offer only a 30-day guarantee. The prices on these cell phones can range from as little as $29 to more than $400.
Cheap Calling Plans
Calling plans range in cost per minute. Some plans offer rates as low as 2 cents per minute. In 2009, Tracphone offered cellular service starting at less than $10 per month with no contracts. Jitterbug is offering no long-term contracts, no roaming fees and minutes can be added that will not expire for a year. Nextel offer a basic calling plan for $29.99 per month on a two-year contract and offers a choice of free phones with the plan.

How Do I Trace Anonymous Cell Phone Text Messages?

Reverse Directory Searches
If you get a text message with a phone number that is unknown to you, try a reverse-directory search. There are dozens of websites that allow users to plug in a telephone number and get at least general info about a number, including the number's city of origin and cell provider. Because most cell phones are not listed in public directory information, it may be necessary to pay a small fee to a specialized search company to conduct the search using special databases, but select which search company you use carefully to avoid being ripped off.
Cell Providers
Sometimes text messages can be sent anonymously, either through a Web interface or by means of special anonymizing technology. Call your cell-phone provider if you get harassing texts. Your carrier can provide a report detailing the sources of your calls and texts, including mobile-to-mobile texts that might not display on your phone.
Law Enforcement
If someone is stalking you by text message, file a police report. Your local law-enforcement agency has the power to track down people who use anonymous Web portals to send threatening texts. Most states have anti-cyberstalking laws that make sending harassing text messages a crime, so calling your local police department is a good first step in stopping the abuse.
Short-Term Fixes
It may take police some time to track down your anonymous correspondent. Until then, because most cell providers cannot block individual texts, you may get some relief from having all text-message services shut off on your phone for a few days. Avoid the temptation to respond in anger (many anonymous texts can't be answered anyway), and wait for the machinery of law enforcement to work through your complaint.

How Do I Get a Free Cell Phone Contract with Bad Credit with Alltel?

1. Apply for cell-phone service by visiting VerizonWireless.com or calling customer service at 800-256-4646. Because Verizon does not state a minimum credit score or list the credit criteria for contract approval, you do not know if you will get approved unless you submit an application. You may be pleasantly surprised. Even if other cell-phone carriers have denied you, you still have a shot. Once you complete the short application, you will have an approval or request for a deposit within minutes.
2. Apply through a third-party site, such as wirefly.com. Wirefly offers the latest Verizon phones for a fraction of the cost. If you plan to spend $100 on a phone at a Verizon store, try getting a free Verizon phone through Wirefly. The large discount on a phone can compensate for paying a deposit. You can use the money you would spend on a phone toward the deposit instead. If you decide to pay the deposit, make your payments on time for a year and Verizon will credit the deposit amount to your account.
3. Ask someone to co-sign. People with bad credit often have relatives or even friends with a better credit rating co-sign their credit applications. If you are unable to make your payments, the co-signer will be responsible. You will need to find someone who will trust your ability to make timely payments. You should also consider having a family member add you to his or her account as an authorized user. Verizon offers a variety of plan options for accounts with multiple lines.
4. Prepay until your credit rating improves. If you have cannot afford a deposit or find someone to co-sign, a prepaid phone plan with Verizon is your last resort. Verizon offers two different prepaid options for customers. You can pay a daily or monthly rate. Prepaid daily rates start at 25 cents a minute or 99 cents per day, with an additional 10 cents per minute for nights and weekends. Monthly prepaid plans start at around $50 a month.

Any IM client will do. These programs send messages from computer to computer, but are also capable of sending messages from computer to phone.
2. Open your instant messaging utility.
3. Start a new message. This involves clicking a 'New Message' button or selecting 'New Message' from the 'File' menu in most programs of this type.
4. Type the telephone number (including the area code) you want to send an SMS message to, proceeded by a +1, in the 'Recipient' box. In the end, your phone number should look something like this:+11234567890
5. Type your message into the 'Message' box and hit 'Send.' This will send your text-based message to the cell phone attached to the phone number you entered.

How to Send SMS Through a Web Service

1. Use an online texting service. Input the text of a message and the phone number into a form on the site, and the text message will be sent to the subscriber you are trying to reach. Some companies also offer international text messaging through their online services.
2. Read the terms of service carefully. Be aware that some will ask you to register, pay a fee, or may use your or the recipient's phone number for advertising purposes. You may also be charged fees for items or services you did not knowingly request, so be sure to read the Web service's terms of service before you send the text message.
3. Use an online messenger such as Yahoo Messenger or AOL Instant Messenger to send a text message. Yahoo Messenger allows you to send free text messages to people around the world in countries such as the Philippines and Vietnam. Only certain wireless carriers are supported by this service, however.
4. Email your text message. Make a list of your most contacted people's cell phone carrier. Each cell phone carrier has email addresses that connect to text message inboxes. Type the phone number of the person you want to contact, followed by the email extension of the person's cell phone carrier. Find a few providers' email addresses in a list on Popular Mechanic's 'How to Email Text Messages to Any Phone' article.
