What Is a SMS Phone Number?

Usage
SMS is an acronym for Short Message Service. SMS is a standardized communication involving the transfer of short text messages between cellular phone users. With yearly usage well into the trillions of messages, SMS is easily the most prevalent form of modern communication in the world. To date, nearly 120 million U.S. cellular phone subscribers use SMS messaging.
A recent Nielsen study indicates that SMS messaging is more widely used than the standard phone call. Among some age groups, SMS messaging is used nearly exclusively. The study found that U.S. subscribers between the ages of 13 and 17 sent an average of 1,742 SMS messages per month, in direct contrast to 231 voice calls in the same period.
Targeting Audiences
For most consumers, the SMS phone number is simply their mobile phone number. With the growing awareness that SMS communication holds a global and growing share in the communications market, however, various entities have been adopting short codes to generate revenue in exchange for value-added services.
A short code is essentially a mobile telephone number that, being significantly shorter than an average number (typically 4 to 6 digits in length), is designed to be easier to remember. They frequently are chosen to numerically represent words or phrases that make them easier for the intended user to retain and utilize.
Short Code
A short code is usually connected with an automated service, which stores the sender's SMS phone number in order to generate content-based SMS messages. This allows marketing companies to narrowcast with remarkable specificity. For example, a short advertisement may be aired during a prime time police drama stating, 'Text 'police' to 12345 to receive the latest updates about the cast of tonight's show and get in on the case.' Upon receiving SMS messages, the automated service connected with it adds the sender's phone number to a database for the generation of automatic messages. These messages are sent to supplement, in this case, viewing of the show. Such interaction is highly useful for marketing trend analysis, in addition to maintaining audience interest. Also, subscribers can be charged higher rates for messages sent to short codes, allowing for even more revenue generating potential.
Continuing Trend
SMS communication dominates the global communication market. Far from showing any indication of lessening, current trends indicate SMS shall continue to grow exponentially. With its convenience and multipurpose applications, SMS messaging seems to be the way we all want to communicate.
Distance
Perhaps an implied statement of our desire for emotional distance in communication, the growing trend in SMS messaging seems to speak less about our desire to connect, and more about our desire for control. A text message can be sent in seconds, and covertly. We need no longer spend 5 protracted minutes actually talking to loved ones or coworkers. We can, instead, convey exactly the information we wish to share at the time we wish to share it. As with many steps in the evolution of communication, it seems with SMS messaging, the more we talk, the less we connect.

How to Obtain Cell Phone Records

1. Contact your wireless carrier. Most wireless carriers will allow you to access your call records through an online account. These records can then be downloaded to your computer and printed for your personal use.
2. Order copies of your billing statements. Billing statements will show the quantity of minutes used, amount of text messages sent, and many companies will list your outgoing call history for that statement period. Billing statements, however, do not usually itemize incoming call information.
3.
Obtain professional help. If the records you are trying to obtain are not your own, you may need to contact a private investigator. Private investigators are commonly used to recover cell records in relation to law suits, custody disputes and divorces. Private investigators are familiar with the laws governing phone records and will work within the law to obtain the records needed. Contact a private investigator in your area through a website like www.Pinow.com which allows you to search by type of investigation and zipcode. You can also look in your local phone directory under private investigator, or enter private investigator and your city into a search engine.
4.
Use a reverse phone number look up database. If you are receiving offensive phone calls you can find a reverse phone number lookup database online (See Resources). Enter a phone number in their search field to gather information. Charges for this service will vary depending on how much information you desire and how many cell numbers you want to have searched. There are many companies online offering this service, but it is up to you to know the legality of the searches you are conducting.
5. Use a forensic evaluation. For phone records of a suspected cheating spouse, dishonest teenager or untrustworthy employee, you can perform a forensic evaluation on the phone which retrieves dialed and received calls as well as deleted information such as text messages and call logs. To do a forensic evaluation, the phone must be in your name. This is why forensics is a popular choice for spouses, employers and parents. Contact companies such as www.Investigation.com and www.Paraben-Consulting.com to inquire about forensic evaluation services.

How to Receive SMS Text Messages

Receiving a Text Message

2. Other phones will be able to send text messages to your phone number. To receive SMS messages from an email account, the sender will have to send the message to your phone's email address. If you don't know this email address, use your phone to text message an email to yourself or one of your contacts. The phone's email address will display in the 'from' part of the email.
3. When receiving a text, your phone will alert you that you have received a new text message, and will display the name, email or phone number of the person who sent you the message. You will have the option to view the message now or later.

How to Do A Free Reverse Phone Number Lookup

1.
Simply do a search on the internet using the phrase free reverse phone directory. The one problem with a free reverse phone number search is that they're not always free, but you can easily find a free reverse phone directory for landline numbers and avoid paying a fee. But if the number is a cell phone number then many of those incur a small fee to access informationn about the person and it can also be more difficult to get information using cell phone numbers since these are still very private. Reverse phone lookups for landlines are much easier but you might not always be able to get all the information you need for free. If you want to get more private contact information for someone, in some cases you may have to pay a fee. If it's a cell number, you should still search online for a free reverse cell phone look up and see what you can find.
2.
Find a free reverse phone number look up service and use it to stop telemarketing calls. It's much easier to do a free reverse phone number search for a business or landline because toll free numbers tend to work better. If you're getting pestering calls from someone, just do a free reverse phone look up and contact the telemarketing owner directly to make a complaint and demand an end to the calls. Another easy and free way to do your own free reverse phone number look up is to simply use the search engines yourself. You'd be surprised at the results you can get. Go on Google and enter the number in quotes to get an exact match. Everybody uses social networks like Facebook. People can add their phone number to their profile page on these sites and if they did, it will probably appear in the search results. You should try that before looking into a free reverse phone directoy.
3.
Decide if a free reverse phone number look up is going to give you the results you're looking for and if it makes more sense to pay a small fee to get what you need. As I mentioned above, a free reverse phone number search is likely to only provide you with part of the information you're looking for. To get additional information these services usually charge a fee. If you will be in need of a reverse phone number lookup frequently then search online for companies that will only charge a one-time fee for unlimited searches. This would be best for a landlord who will be frequently screening tenants or for other situations where it would be useful.

California Hands

Hands Free
In California, cell phones may not be held and used while the driver drives. A cell phone may be used only if it is used with the hands-free option. The fine for holding and using a cell phone while driving is $20 for the first infraction and $50 for subsequent incidences. Subsequent penalties may substantially increase those amounts.
Exceptions
There are exceptions in California for holding and using a cell phone while driving. Fines do not apply when a person uses a cell phone or wireless device to reach emergency services such as a health care provider, law enforcement or the fire department. Fines also do not apply to those using a cell or wireless telephone while authorized as the driver of an emergency vehicle. In addition, the law does not apply to those on private property nor, generally, to those driving a transit vehicle or school bus. Some farm vehicles and tow trucks are also exempt from the ban on cell phone use while driving.
Age Restrictions
California more tightly restricts drivers under 18 when it comes to cell phone use. Those under 18 are completely banned from using a cell phone or any other electronic hand-held device while driving, even those with hands-free options.
Primary and Secondary
For an adult California driver, holding and using a cell phone while driving is a primary offense. This means a patrolman can flag and cite you just for using the cell phone without the hands-free option. For those under 18, holding and using a cell phone while driving is a secondary offense. This means the teen driver cannot be pulled over simply for holding a cell phone and using it while driving. The police must have another, primary reason for pulling the teenage driver over, such as speeding or driving recklessly.
Dialing
California law does not ban a driver from holding and dialing a phone while driving. A cell phone driver is also allowed to use a speaker phone.

Options for Calling to From Mexico

Types
You can call a landline number in Mexico, which costs less than calling a mobile phone. Calling landlines in Mexico usually costs 4 cents per minute, while calling mobiles costs 20 cents per minute. Cell phone carriers also offer international calling plans, like AT&T's Viva Mexico, which charges $55 a month, and Verizon's Mexico-Friendly calling plan, where callers can opt to extend their nationwide coverage to Mexico for $50-$60 a month.
Effects
Calling from Mexico will help people keep in touch with their family members in the U.S. However, it is expensive to call from Mexico to the U.S.; that's why most of the time, it's those in the U.S. who call their friends and family in Mexico. Calls originating from the U.S. are not without a price though, and although it is cheaper to call Mexico from the U.S., having relatives from Mexico call the U.S. will help split costs.
Cheaper techniques
There are a number of options available for those who want to call Mexico from the United States. Prepaid cards are popular, and you can buy cards with denominations that range from $5 to $20. There may also be cheaper options online, such as using Skype, where you call directly from your computer to phones in Mexico. Skype has international rates for calls originating from a computer to a landline or mobilephone, but you and the recipient can make free calls if you are both online.
Calling From Mexico
One of the popular ways to call from Mexico is through payphone cards, which are also known as 'tarjeta lada.' Since calling from Mexico to the U.S. is expensive, Mexicans find it cheaper to limit their calls to the specified minutes on a card instead of calling direct. Another popular way of calling from Mexico aside from phone cards is through call back services, which charge your credit card directly. Call back services allow you to dial a number, hang up after a ring, then have an operator call you back to connect you to your call recipient.
Potential
With the onset of online telecommunications services, people may be able to call Mexico for free. Rebtel.com, a mobile VoIP provider, has a service called 'Smart Call,' where a person in the U.S. can talk to a person in Mexico for free on their mobile phones. Talkster.com also offers a similar service, where people can make international calls for free by listening to ads.

How to Find Free Software for a Smart Phone

1.
Purchase a memory card that is compatible with your particular brand of smartphone. The memory card will allow you to store files that are too large for your smartphone’s built in memory. Since games and other software tools will take up a tremendous amount of space on your smartphone’s internal memory, the memory card will provide you the luxury of not having to worry about running out of space. Most smart phones will have an opening on the outside of the unit to accommodate the memory card; others have this compartment hidden away under the battery.
2. Purchase a data cable for your phone. In order for you to transfer the free software files to your smartphone and storage card, you will need to use a data cable. The data cable plugs into your computer’s USB outlet with one end and connects to your smartphone with the other. The computer will identify that another storage device has been connected, and from there you can transfer the files. The data cable will also work in reverse to transfer files that are no longer necessary to your phone, back to your PC.
3. Search the web for free software by using the keywords 'Smartphone + free + software.' There are several websites that offer free software for your smartphone. These can be downloaded to your home computer and then transferred to your phone for later execution. Websites such as 'Smartphone Freeware' offer an abundant amount of free software for the smartphone and pocket pc compatible phone.
4. Locate the software that you would like to download from the desired website, and download it to your computer. The software file itself will have to be executed on the smartphone itself, so don’t open the file on the computer prior to transferring it to your smartphone using the data cable. Be sure to download the file to a folder on your computer that is easily accessible.
5. Transfer the free smartphone software using the data cable. Plug the data cable into your computer, and attach it to your smartphone. Allow the computer time to identify your device and then proceed with the transfer.
6. Execute the file on your smartphone. Once the free software title has been transferred to your phone, check your smartphone’s memory card for the program. Open the file and save it on your phone. The software should then create an icon in your smartphone’s program file to use it when you are ready.

1. Turn on the cell phone. A live cell phone is in continual relay with surrounding cell phone towers to ensure the strongest signal, meaning the phone must be on to send a signal.

3. Visit the txtDrop website (see Resources) to send a text directly from the front page. The text will send to your friend quickly, and your friend's reply can be sent directly to an email account by specifying your email address in the field provided.
4. Access the SMS Everywhere website (see Resources) for free, individual texting. The site also offers bulk texting, scheduled messages and user development, so users can develop their own messaging software.
