How to Make Your Number Toll Free

1. Contact SMS/800 to find a Responsible Organization or RespOrg. SMS/800 is a service that manages toll-free services and RespOrgs use SMS/800 to give you a toll-free number. You can find a RespOrg by going through the list on the SMS/800 website or by calling SMS/800 at 1-888-SMS-3300 (see Resource).
2. Prepare several possible numbers for your toll-free account. A toll-free number has a three-digit code, followed by seven more digits. There are five toll-free codes as of 2011: 800, 888, 877, 866 and 855. You can choose to have the last seven digits spell out your business name to make it easy to remember.
3. Contact a RespOrg to set up your toll-free account, and reserve a number. Toll-free numbers are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis, so the number you want may not be available.
