How to Send a Text to a Phone on Gmail
1. Launch a Web browser and log in to your Gmail account.
2. Click the settings icon at the top-right and then select 'Labs.'
3. Set 'SMS in Chat' to 'Enable' and then click 'Save Changes.'
4. Send a text message to a contact from your address book by hovering over the contact in the Google Talk pane and selecting 'More' and then 'Send SMS.' If your friend's phone number is already stored, the chat window will automatically open and you can send the text message. If you have not saved a phone number for the contact, Gmail will prompt you for one.
5. Send a text message to a specific phone number not in your contact list by typing the number, including area code, into the input box at the top of the Google Talk pane and then selecting 'Send SMS.'
