How to Activate a Ghost Phone
1. Use Toll Free Forwarding to register your ghost phone number (see Resources). The service offers local numbers for area codes in 700 cities spread between 79 countries. The rates vary depending on the destination number. For example, if you register a phone number in San Francisco that forwards to New York, it costs less than forwarding the same number to Madrid, Spain. The customer pays the local fees associated with the ghost number and you pay the per minute charge to Toll Free Forwarding. The service includes advanced tracking software that shows you the pertinent details of each call. These include caller ID, duration and geographical location wherever possible.
2. Use Localphone to activate a ghost number (see Resources). Localphone offers numbers from the area codes of major cities in 49 different countries. This service is designed to forward the ghost phone number to a regular phone, cell phone or to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) programs on computers. This flexibility allows you to travel anywhere in the world and still receive phone calls from your local number. Each client may own an unlimited amount of ghost phone numbers.
3. Use Ring2Skype for your ghost phone number (see Resources). This service is completely free. The only requirement is that you download and install the free Skype VoIP software on your computer (see Resources). The service has limited local numbers available, so you may have to give a California number to friends in Kentucky, for example. Ring2Skype is limited to forwarding all calls made to the ghost number to your Skype account on a computer or Skype-enabled device.

The Disadvantage of SMS
SMS
SMS messages, more commonly known as text messages or texts, are brief, text-only messages transmitted over wireless networks from one user to another. Due to their convenience, swiftness and brevity, SMS messages have become an almost universal form of communication in the modern world, with most cell phones and smartphones capable of sending and receiving these messages.
Length
One of the biggest drawbacks to an SMS message is its length. SMS messages can be no longer than 160 characters, with many texting systems allowing carryover to be sent in a separate message. Granted, the odds are you won't be texting your friends the entirety of Leo Tolstoy's 'War and Peace,' but 160 characters can still be a decidedly small space to work with when you need to send detailed information. While carryover texts can address this, they are still considered a separate message, which can be another drawback if you are paying for texting.
Cost
Texts can be quick and convenient, but depending on your wireless plan, they can also be prohibitively expensive over time. SMS rates vary from one carrier to another, and many plans include a limited number of messages for free while others charge a flat fee for unlimited texting. Some carriers charge not only for sending messages, but also for receiving them. While the rate per message may not be much, the sheer volume of texts sent and received in a single month can quickly add up to a sizable portion of your wireless bill.
Multimedia
SMS messages also lack the ability to display multimedia. You can text your friends about how awesome a song is, but you can't let them hear it with a simple text. Some carriers and devices allow the sending of MMS, or Multimedia Messaging Services, which can accommodate some multimedia features. However, with a pure SMS message, you're limited to only a single medium -- text.

Ways to Look at Text Messages Without Your Phone
Text Message Spyware
Spyware software is initially loaded onto the cell phone. Once in place, the software sends the text messages to the software company's server. Then the messages are stored in an online account to be accessed by the account holder. Even if the cell phone user erases the texts from the cell phone, the text messages are recorded and saved on the site.
Online Text Messaging Services
Online text messaging services let users receive and send text messages from their computers. The user needs to be logged into the service's website to create text messages and view reply texts. People who do not have their phones can log onto any computer and still use text messaging to communicate. Many of these services are free.
Cell Phone Service Providers
Some cell phone service providers offer the opportunity for users to send text messages from a computer to a cell phone. The service will indicate when the text has been received but will not retrieve returned texts. Those messages go directly to the cell phone. The sent text messages also will not be saved online. Another option available from some cell phone service providers is the ability to set up an online photo album. This allows users to save photos that are sent by text messages to an online account to be viewed or retrieved later. Photos taken by the user's cell phone can also be saved to this online album.

How to Monitor Cell Phone Text Messages
1. Study your federal and state telecommunications laws to ensure your intended use of the software is, in fact, legal. As examples, parents may legally install mobile-monitoring software to find out who is calling/texting their kids and also use GPS trackers to locate their children. Couples may agree to install tracking software on each others' phones to always know where the other one is, or even to assure their partner that they are staying faithful. As a general rule of thumb, however, it is illegal to spy on anyone's phone (cell or land-line) without their knowledge and consent.
2. Investigate the various cell-phone monitoring software programs available on the market. Be prepared to pay either a one-time price for the software package or a monthly fee (usually around $10-$15 per month, depending on the features you want).A few popular choices are Disney Mobile for parents of young children, Verizon's Family Locator and the Radar program, for which you can sign up at MyMobileWatchdog.com. See References and Resources for more information.
3. Sign up for the service of your choice, set up your secure log-in and password, then download the software via wireless to a compatible cell phone. In this tutorial, we will be using the Radar service, but you'll find the basic functions of all cell-phone monitoring software are essentially alike, regardless of which one you ultimately choose.
4. Log in to the Radar system and set up your child's 'approved' friends and family call list. Once this is done, you can log back in to the site anytime to see a record of all incoming/outgoing calls, texts, picture and video messages that are sent to your child's cell phone. If anyone who is not on the 'approved' list calls or texts your child's phone, Radar quickly sends an alert to you on your cell phone.
5. Inform your kids that their cell-phone use is being monitored. It is better for them to know in advance than to be surprised by a confrontation later. They will feel as if their privacy has been invaded and that you are 'snooping' on them. Even if you have every legal right to do so, not telling them can create trust issues, hurt feelings and tension between you, because eventually they will find out.'Kids' privacy rights are, by custom and tradition, like respecting closed doors and journals,' warns Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center. 'Constant surveillance of your kids, or secret surveillance of your kids, may not be the best way to build trust, and that's something parents need to consider.'
