How to Send an SMS Using Gmail

1. Click on the 'Settings' link located near the upper-right portion of the screen.
2. Click on the 'Labs' tab. Navigate down to the application labeled 'Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat' and click enable. At the top of the 'Labs' screen, click the 'Save Changes' button.
3. Enter the recipients phone number in the box just under 'Chat' that says 'Search, add, or invite.' Alternately, you could add a cell phone number to an existing contact in your list.
4. Roll the mouse over the contact and select the 'Send SMS' option. Enter the desired message and click send.
