How to Make Free Gateway International Calls

1. Choose a VoIP gateway. These devices can cost anywhere between $250 and $5,000, as of 2010. They work by converting the analog signal from your phone line into digital packets that can sent over the Internet. You can also choose to purchase a Skype phone, which combines a gateway into a phone (see Resources). This costs $199, as of 2010.
2. Choose a VoIP service. A few you can consider include Skype, Twinkle and Speak Freely.
3. Download and install the VoIP software you have chosen. Click on the file and wait for the program to install. Reboot your computer when the installation finishes.
4. Run the software by double-clicking on the program's icon located on your desktop or in the 'Start' menu.
5. Create an account. Fill in the necessary information to register an account, including a user name and a password.
6. Log on to the VoIP service. Enter your account name or user name and password and then press 'Enter' on your keyboard.
7. Connect an Ethernet cable from your DSL modem to your gateway. Then connect your gateway to a regular phone. Make an international call as you normally would. The calls will be free as long as the VoIP service you are using permits free calls to landlines.
