How to Get a Free Landline

1. Bundle your services. Purchasing services, such as cable, phone and Internet from the same company can result in a large package discount. Compare the amount you are currently paying for your landline and other services, then review the bundled packages; the savings might completely eliminate the cost of the landline.
2. Call your regional public utility commission; this department can help you apply for federal discounts that eliminate the cost of owning a landline -- e.g., enrollment in the LifeLine Across America program saves you $10 or more, which is enough to cover the cost of a local-only or emergency-only landline.
3. Contact the National Association of State Utility Advocates to talk to an advocate. Utility advocates can help you get necessary utilities when you cannot afford them.
