How to Fix Static in a Phone Line

1. Verify that all phone cords are securely plugged in. You should hear the plugged ends snap into place inside the wall jack and phone base. Tug on it very gently to verify that both ends are connected.
2. Disconnect the phone 's cord from the wall jack if you still hear static. Unplug the phone adapter power cord from the AC wall outlet. Unplug the adapter jack from the phone base. Wait one minute, and then replug all connections. Pick up the phone and check for a static-free dial tone.
3. Unplug the answering machine if you still hear static. Pick up the phone and check for a static-free dial tone. Repeat this process for burglar alarms, fax machines, Web and satellite TV to determine if any one of these devices or services is causing static. Contact your burglar alarm service for a replacement or suggestions on how to reduce static if that device is the source of the problem.
4. Inspect all phone line cords for extreme bends, cuts and wear. Check all of the phone cords for devices, such as fax machines and answering machines cords. Replace all damaged line cords with new, good quality ones. If you still hear static, contact your telephone company and put in a repair service ticket.
