How to Use Gmail to Send SMS Messages (Text)

1. Go to Gmail and sign in if necessary.
2. Click 'Compose Mail,' located on the left section of the screen. This takes you to a new, blank email.
3. Write your desired text message into the body of the email. Remember to keep it relatively short so it shows up to your friend's phone in one piece.
4. Type your friend's phone number without dashes, followed by his provider-dependent suffix, into the address field of the email. For example, if your friend's provider is Cingular and his number is 415-678-9012, address the email to 4156789012@cingularme.com.
5. Click the 'Send' button to send the email. It appears as a text message on your friend's phone.
